Many women do not realize just how significant breastfeeding is for weight loss after pregnancy. After the birth of my first child, I believed the only way to lose my pregnancy weight was to quit breastfeeding and go on a diet. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Of all the things we do in the struggle for weight loss, proper nutrition seems to be the most difficult hurdle to overcome. Many of us overeat for emotional reasons; we eat when we are stressed, when we are tired, and when we are depressed. Having a new baby in your life brings all of these emotions to the surface every day. As well, breastfeeding mothers experience intense food cravings - it's all too easy to grab a bag of chips or a box of Oreos.


My nutrition plan is based on eating from a wide variety of foods. Eating this way ensures that you receive the nutrients that you need; this is very important for breastfeeding mothers. Not only will eating this way replenish the nutrients that breastfeeding uses, but improve health now and for the long term.

When you feed your body the right foods, or give your body what it needs, you can naturally reduce food cravings. Eating right will make you feel better emotionally, and provide you with more energy. Eating right does not mean restricting yourself - you can eat what you need, and still lose weight quickly.

 Exercise
Mothers of new babies have very little time to devote to long hours at a gym or exercise class. As a mother of two toddlers (and a pre-teen!), I understand how difficult it is to find the time to exercise. But the truth is, if we want to lose weight we need to do some form of exercise.

The good news is that we don't have to spend hours at a gym every day or attend strenuous exercise classes to lose weight. There are many gentle, simple ways to exercise that are very effective, that will help us lose the weight we need. And there are several exercises that we can do with our babies without the need for childcare.

In my program, I have included the exercises that I do on a regular basis, that have helped me lose weight quickly after each of my pregnancies. They are all gentle on your body (which allows even those of us with back pain to exercise), great for your health overall, and most you can do without the need for childcare.

 Your Metabolism
One of the best ways to lose weight and keep it off for good is to increase your metabolism. A high metabolism burns energy (and fat) while you rest - what could be better than that?

One way is to build muscle through exercising with weights, but there are many other ways that do not require strenuous exercise or extensive weight training.

 Goal setting and taking action
